The University of Kansas Cancer Center partners with Casual Astronaut to create engaging annual reports that showcase its cutting-edge research and vibrant community outreach.
The University of Kansas Cancer Center (KUCC) is transforming cancer care through world-class research and personable outreach in communities across Kansas. For the last three years, KUCC has tasked C/A to design its printed annual report, Beyond the Bench, which showcases news, people and research from around the center. The goal of the publication is to improve engagement with internal stakeholders, donors and members of peer institutions.
Custom Illustrations & QR Codes
For the 2022 annual report, C/A completed a redesign of the publication and produced custom illustrations that creatively and cohesively expressed life at KUCC. The eye-catching cover illustration complemented artwork in the main feature about receiving an esteemed “Comprehensive” designation from the National Cancer Institute. Throughout the issue, QR codes invited readers to learn more about research, find clinical trials and give financial support.

Spotlighting a New Facility
KUCC again turned to C/A for the 2023 edition of Beyond the Bench, led by the story of a $100 million donation for the construction of a new, more integrated cancer center. C/A’s design for this issue highlighted the architect’s renderings of the gleaming new building to help readers envision KUCC’s prominent place in the future of cancer care.

Highlighting Pioneering Work in Cell Therapy
For the 2024 edition of Beyond the Bench, KUCC wanted to tell the story of the advancements the center was making in cellular therapeutics. To accomplish this visually, we used illustration to unite the elements of a broad topic into a single appealing image. Inside, components of the illustration add texture and color to the pages.
